Her debut novel, DIVNA, inspired by Bulgarian mythology and set in 2024, marks the beginning of the Nocturnal Creatures series. Her short stories have won awards in national literary competitions and have been included in various anthologies. A central theme in her work is the clash between ancient beliefs and modern humanity—characters grappling with questions of identity, freedom, desire, memory, power, and the consequences of difficult choices.

Elissa Hess’s debut novel, DIVNA, was published in 2024 and marks the beginning of the Nocturnal Creatures series. The novel draws inspiration from Bulgarian mythology, exploring the atmosphere of folklore as a living entity in which recognisable human conflicts remain vivid to this day.

Elissa Hess’s short stories span folklore, rural drama, vampire fiction, horror, fantasy, and science fiction. Her works have received numerous awards, including first prize in the “Prose” category at the 2024 “The Forgotten Language” National Contest for “The Bread for Raiko”, the jury’s first prize in “Written in Blood” 2024 for “Eyes Wide Open,” a special award from “The Forgotten Language” 2025 for “The Last Alchemist,” second prize in the 7th National Contest for Original Fairy Tales in 2025 and first prize in the 6th National Contest for Fantasy Short Stories “Dandelion Wine in Winter” (age group 18+) – for “Resurrected Love.” Her latest decoration is the First prize in the 2026 National Sci-Fi Story Contest "Bulgakon".

Elissa Hess is a Bulgarian author of fantasy, folklore, horror, sci-fi and speculative fiction who writes under a pen name in both Bulgarian and English.

Her debut novel, DIVNA, was published in 2024 as the first book in the Night Creatures series and draws inspiration from Bulgarian mythology and folklore.

Elissa Hess is also actively involved in writing short fiction. Her short stories have won awards in national literary competitions, including first prize in the “Prose” category of “The Forgotten Language” 2024 for “The Bread for Raiko” and first prize in the Sixth National Fantasy Short Story Contest “Dandelion Wine in Winter”—age group 18+—at the Youth Center in Vratsa for her “Resurrected Love.”

Regardless of genre, her work returns to themes of identity, freedom, desire, change, and the consequences of crossing boundaries— regardless of whether supernatural or entirely human.
